Monster is the anime I recommend when somebody tells me they want a thriller but not another supernatural chess match, tournament arc, or genius teenager posing under blue lighting while explaining his master plan to nobody in particular.

I like that stuff. I will happily watch Light Yagami write names like he is doing homework for Satan. I love a good power system, a cursed technique, a Stand, a notebook, a time loop, a murder robot, whatever. But Monster scares me in a quieter way because it removes the safety net anime usually gives you. Nobody here needs magic. Nobody levels up. Nobody wins because their aura flares harder than the other guy’s.

I did not expect Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End to wreck me.

I expected a solid fantasy anime with a good reputation, some pretty magic, a calm vibe, and the usual internet chorus telling me, “No seriously, this one is different.” The internet says that about everything. Usually what they mean is, “the animation is nice and one supporting character is sad.” That is not the same thing.

Tanner picked Spy x Family. I want to be clear about that because I feel like this is important context – I didn’t come in knowing what this show was gonna do to me, I just knew it looked funny and family-friendly and we needed something we could sit down and watch together without me having to explain a bunch of stuff. Okay so I need to preface this by saying I watched a lot of these shows when I was younger and I thought they were good, you know, some of them I even thought were great, but there’s this thing that happens when you become a dad, and especially when you’ve been through the kind of thing I went through fighting for my kid, and like I don’t know how to explain it exactly but certain scenes just land differently now, like the emotional weight completely shifts and you’re sitting there rewatching something you already know the ending to and you’re still crying, which is embarrassing to admit lol.
